Calvert County Natural Resources (CCNRD) and Calvert Nature Society (CNS) seek interns to lead hands-on outdoor environmental education (EE) programs. Interns will assist naturalist staff in implementing lessons for Calvert County elementary school students in Calvert County nature parks. Interns will learn local natural history and teaching techniques. Great career builder for individuals interested in careers in EE and interpretation or environmental studies.

Hours: Ā 
Early April ā€“ early June (exact dates TBD) Ā  Ā *fall positions are also availableā ā ā ā ā ā ā .
Weekdays ā€“ at least one day/week, 9:00am-2:00pm
Approximately 5-6 hours/week for 10 weeks (or a minimum of about 60 hours)

Exact start and end dates will vary depending the program calendar and on and intern's availability.

Location: Flag Ponds Nature Park Ā (spring) or Fishing Creek boardwalk in Chesapeake Beach (fall)

$900 stipend funding is available for St. Mary's College students through the SHIP Internship Program!

Responsibilities include:
ā€¢ Assist naturalist staff with teaching CHESPAX 3rd Terrapins fieldtrip (spring) or 5th grade CHESPAX Oysters (fall)
ā€¢ Optional: assist with park operations: including animal care and/or garden and trail maintenance

Qualifications:
ā€¢ Ages 18 and up with education background in environmental science, environmental education, biology, recreation, or related field of study
ā€¢ Work/volunteer experience with childrenĀ 
ā€¢ Attend an Education Volunteer orientation and observe a minimum of 2 CHESPAX fieldtrip days
ā€¢ A demonstrated interest and passion for environmental education and the natural world
ā€¢ Successful completion of a Calvert County Public Schools background check
ā€¢ Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred, but not necessary

The successful applicant will:Ā 
ā€¢ Have excellent communication skillsĀ 
ā€¢ Be self-motivated
ā€¢ Be capable of working independently with mentor guidance as well as in a team with patience and flexibility

Outcomes of the internship may include:
ā€¢ Develop teaching and educational skills in an outdoor setting
ā€¢ Learn how to structure and guide hands-on inquiry based programs for elementary school students
ā€¢ Facilitate learning and manage groups effectivelyĀ 
ā€¢ Training in local natural history
ā€¢ Improve leadership skills by assisting with leading groups of students, their chaperones, and teachers
ā€¢ Other projects may be developed based on internā€™s interests and CCNRD needs
