The psychology department is delighted to welcome Dr. Nayantara Kurpad, Dr. Amie Severino ‘11, and Dr. Yu Sun Chung to St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Nayantara Kurpad earned her PhD in Applied Psychology where she specialized in Applied Cognitive Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She completed her M.Phil. at Jain University, Bangalore and then flew across the oceans to receive her second masters in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Kurpad's research lies in the intersection of cognitive psychology and education. With roots in cognitive theories and its applications to practical situations, she focuses on investigating the why’s and how’s of student learning, with a special interest in metacognition. Specifically, she is interested in answering questions related to factors that impact student learning such as test-impaired new learning in the classroom, question order on students’ metacognitive judgments, the role of variability in students’ performance, study strategies of younger and older adults, and a comparison between older and younger adults’ metacognitive judgments.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Amie Severino ’11 earned her PhD in Neuroscience from Wake University School of Medicine and completed postdoctoral work in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California Los Angeles. Amie’s most recent position was serving as histology and imaging core manager for the National Institute on Drugs of Abuse while teaching as an adjunct faculty member at College of Southern Maryland. Just prior to that she was a clinical research coordinator at Mountain Manor Treatment Center. Her areas of research specialization include opioid addiction, pain mechanisms, and affective dysregulation (anxiety, depression).

Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Yu Sun Chung earned her PhD in Cognitive Psychology along with Cognitive, Computational, & Systems Neuroscience Pathway at Washington University in St. Louis. She obtained her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Korea University in Seoul, South Korea, and obtained extensive postdoctoral training at Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center (affiliated with Yale University) and Duke University. The aims of her recent projects are to examine 1) how puberty influences cognitive-affective processes in adolescents with a focus on sex differences, and 2) how early stressful life events are related to adolescents’ mental health in a sex-specific way. To probe these questions, she uses large, longitudinal public fMRI data (i.e., Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study®), EEG task paradigms, and analysis of pubertal hormones.

Please join us in welcoming Nayantara, Yu Sun, and Amie (back!) to St. Mary's College of Maryland!
