Please join us for the Math/CS SMP Presentations from 2 - 3pm on April 26th via Zoom.

2pm:
Graham Bos, "The Envious Two-headed Cookie Monster Game"
Mentor: Alex Meadows
Abstract: In an expansion of the Cookiemonster problem proposed by Richard Guy a 2014 paper by Khovanova proposed and examined a combinatorial game based on the problem known as the cookie monster game. This paper builds upon these ideas in its creation and examination of the ``Envious Two-headed Cookie Monster game", an impartial takeaway game played on three piles. After a brief background of combinatorial game theory as a whole, this paper presents evidence and insight into the patterns and position classifications of the game as well as some of its simple variations. Overall, this paper uses discovered similarities and patterns between Wythoff's nim and the``Envious Two-headed Cookiemonster game" to not only gain a greater understanding of the game's winning strategy, but to conceptually devise an algorithm for quickly categorizing positions in the game.

2:30pm:
Alex de la Paz, "Detecting Ships in Satellite Imagery with Neural Networks"
Mentor: Alan Jamieson
Abstract: A convergence of advances in Artificial Intelligence, scalability in high performance computing resources, and a rapidly growing market of satellite data providers are creating an industry capable of near-real-time monitoring of the Earth.

This presentation will discuss the use of deep learning techniques to identify maritime vessels in electro-optical remote sensing imagery. Several open-source imagery datasets and neural network architectures specific to image classification and object detection will be covered.
